Just touch your debit or credit card on a yellow card reader to pay for your journey, the same as you would with your Oyster card, and you won’t have to queue for tickets at the station and won’t have to top up. Always remember to touch in and out.
Can I use contactless card on National Rail?
You can now use your contactless payment card or compatible mobile device on most National Rail services in the Oyster Pay As You Go (PAYG) area where contactless payments are accepted, as well as the bus, Tube, London Trams, DLR, Elizabeth line and London Overground.
Can you use contactless on trains in London?
Contactless payment cards can be used to travel on most National Rail services in London, as well as bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail. Fares and daily caps in London Zones 1-9 are the same as with Oyster PAYG.
Is it cheaper to buy a train ticket or use contactless?

What happens if you tap out and dont tap in?

If you don’t touch in and out, we can’t tell where you’ve travelled from or to, so your journey will be incomplete. Maximum fares don’t count towards capping. If you don’t touch in, you may be charged a penalty fare.
Do you tap on and off the train?
At the end of a journey you must ‘Touch-Off’ to ensure the correct fare is applied. If you don’t Touch-On you are committing fare evasion. If you don’t Touch-Off you will pay more.
Is it cheaper to use an Oyster card or contactless?
It’s the easiest and most convenient way to pay, is supported on every form of transport, and in most cases is either cheaper or the same price as using an Oyster card.
Can I use contactless card instead of Oyster?
If your bank card shows the contactless payment symbol, you can use it to pay as you go straight away. You’ll pay an adult rate fare. Many contactless cards issued outside the UK can be used to pay as you go for travel (overseas transaction fees may apply):
Do you get charged if you tap in and out at the same station?
You can get a refund if you have been charged for touching in and out at the same station without making a journey.
How many times can you use contactless before it asks for your PIN?
Card issuers only allow five consecutive contactless transactions that can be made before a PIN is requested in order to prevent fraud. So if you only use your card for small payments make sure you can recall the PIN to avoid getting caught out at the till.
What stations are covered by Oyster?
You can use Oyster Pay As You Go in London on all suburban trains stopping in Zones 1 – 9 and journeys to:

It is no longer possible to buy the full range of tickets on board a train. Like all train companies*, you must buy a ticket before you board, or risk getting a penalty fare.

Is it cheaper to buy train tickets on the day or online?
Is an Advance On The Day ticket cheapest on the day? An Advance On The Day ticket (when available) is cheaper than both the Off-Peak and Anytime tickets brought on the same day.
How many times can you tap in a day?
There is no limit to the number of times you can use a contactless payment card in a day via the contactless method, but there is a caveat to this. Intermittently, your bank may ask for you to enter your PIN to ensure it’s you – and not anyone else – that is using your card.
What happens if you tap twice at same station?
If you tap in at a station, you can’t pass your oyster card back to your mate behind, the system won’t accept two consecutive tap ins. However, it WILL accept them if the two are broken up by a tap out. So to discourage that, there’s a hefty fee involved with doing so.
How much does TfL charge for not tapping out?

If you spend longer than the maximum journey time, you could be charged two maximum fares. A single maximum fare is: up to £8.90 in Zones 1-9. up to £26.00 beyond Zone 9, including on the Heathrow Express.
What happens if you forget to tap out at train station?

If you forget to tap in or out with your contactless card you’ll get the same maximum fare as you would with Oyster.
What happens if you don’t tap when changing trains?
If you don’t touch on a pink card reader: You’ll pay the higher pay as you go fare that includes Zone 1 travel.
