If your application was refused, you should not travel to Canada. If you try to travel to Canada with a refused eTA, you will be prevented from boarding your flight. We encourage you to reapply for an eTA only once you have addressed the reason(s) leading to the refusal of your application.
Why was my eTA refused?
If the eTA is denied, you will receive the response by email from the Canadian authorities. This refusal could be justified because of a visa cancellation, a pre-border refusal. It could also be due to a simple or complex criminality situation.
What if my eTA is not approved?
If your ETA is refused, you may lodge a new application and provide further evidence to address concerns (this must include the required information specified above). If you wish to lodge a new application, you must use the Australian ETA app.
How many times can you apply for an eTA?
No. Once approved, your eTA is valid for five years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first. You can come to Canada as many times as you wish as long as your eTA remains valid.
Does eTA guarantee entry to Canada?
With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada as often as you want for short stays (normally for up to six months at a time). You do not need an eTA for travel within Canada. An eTA doesn’t guarantee entry to Canada.
Is eTA hard to get?
How long it takes to get an eTA. It’s best to get an eTA before you book your flight to Canada. Most applicants get their eTA approval (via an email) within minutes. However, some requests can take several days to process if you’re asked to submit supporting documents.
Why would an eTA be Cancelled?
An eTA can be cancelled in cases where information comes to light that you have become inadmissible to Canada. At that point, an immigration officer would cancel your eTA and let you know by email. If your application was cancelled, you should not travel to Canada.
How do I know if my eTA is approved?
You’ll be notified by email when your eTA is approved. The approval email includes your eTA number. Keep this number in case you need to contact us or want to check the status of your eTA in the future.
Can I submit eTA application twice?
If you are an ETA holder, you will need to apply for a new ETA to be linked to your new passport. ETAs in a previous passport can no longer be used once a new passport has been issued.

How do I get an urgent eTA for Canada?
Can I get my eTA on an urgent basis? When you apply, indicate in detail on the application the urgent and/or compelling reason for your travel. This information will be considered when your application is processed. However, most applicants will receive a confirmation within minutes.
