Do I get charged for texting to Canada?

Of course. If you both use iMessage then you can send them that way. Even if one of you did not use iMessage you could still send regular international SMS texts, although depending on your cellular plan those may cost you.
Is texting Free Canada wide?
Canada-wide messaging means you can send and receive text, picture, and video messages anywhere in Canada. Text, picture and video messaging sent from Canada to an international number will be charged pay-per-use rates.
